Black Walnut Dolls... New item

I love working with black walnuts... as you can tell from that basket of black walnuts that's in nearly every item picture I've taken for almost two years! LOL!

So I had this vision last year of these little Ladies and this week I've made them come alive.

(it's just more of a candid picture shot, as you can tell I just plopped them on my prop area there)

All hand stitched, vintage and hand dyed cottons and wools... made into a prairie doll - bottle doll fashion... with of course, black walnut heads. They even have little wooden stands to make them stand up. They're all about 6 inches tall and they look SO CUTE with their full apron's and dresses just standing there.

These were my first three (in order) and I'm working on a bunch more on the craft table... As I work on each one, she'll take on a personality of her own and she'll have to tell me what kind of apron she wants, or what color shawl... and of course, the bonnet... that always determines her first impression when she goes out in public.

Some are very primitive... a couple I even used micro checked and REALLY made full aprons... I'm even working on a pure aged white one (ya ok, it's more blanc). Just having a little fun over here in Kentucky on a cold wet day...

I haven't named them yet... "Nuthead's" came to mind, but that's really not so primitive is it? Hmmmm, someone mentioned "Cupboard Tuck"... I think they look like a Primitive Thumbelina!

I'll have them up for sale when I get more finished here in the next day (or couple of).... I may even save a couple for an update or two on either The Eclectic Artisans Webshow, or The Humble Arts around the first of the month..... decisions... decisions.... ehhhh I'll think of that later. I want to go back and play dress up with my dollies!

These are Kelle Arvay's pug puppies... you know, she breeds them. You also know that it's completely unfair that she lives so far away from me. You also know that I often think of dognapping in my spare time... maybe after I hit Annie's house for Marshall, I can cruise on over to Kelle's house and grab an armfull of these. (maybe two armfulls) hehehehe

Welcome to the world Master Chase!

It's a big world and you just made it better. Happy Birthday Master Chase!
You are a very loved little boy!
I've become a Very Proud Great Aunt today for the first time!

Master Chase was born today, weighing in at 11 pounds 2 ounces and 20.5 inches long. He's 4 weeks premature and he's on oxygen right now but so far doing ok.

His Mommy has Juvenile Diabetes so, there was tons of complications and problems... but I'm hopeful that Mommy and Master Chase will be recovering just fine (cross your fingers)

I don't have any pictures yet... but I'm promised some tomorrow. I heard he's just gorgeous. :)

I think Master Chase is big enough to go on out and get a job... LOL

Update on The Humble Arts and.......

I've updated my page on The Humble Arts website tonight with a sweet rag doll!

She's so soft and huggable! I wish you could just pick her up through your computer screen!

But I really like her robins egg blue homespun dress. I dyed that fabric last week and I couldn't wait to use it.... This doll just yelled out to wear it!

I've learned that I can add a new product and do this html thing and let my customers view more pictures of that product.

Hand Dyed Fabric and Sneak Peek!

Yes Folks... this Stewie guy just will NOT give up on woo'ing Miss Riley!

For those of you who are new to my blog, Stewie is Mo's Puggle. Mo is my wonderful friend at Wings and Paws Primitives... and she's just as crazy as I am. hehehe

This time though, I think Miss Riley fell head over paws for Stewie Stud... I mean, come on!
How could she NOT????

Riley's Mommy asked Dawn (who is Stewie's Auntie) to make one of her GORGEOUS bags for Riley!

Oh yes... not just any bag mind you... but a Bluejean bag, great shape, with pockets inside (of course lined) There's also a rhinestone bone snap on the closure! You've got to run over and get yourself one of Dawn's bags... She's REALLY REALLY GOOD!

I'm Etsy.com Featured Artist!

A couple weeks ago Etsy Admin contacted me and asked me if I would be interested in being their Featured Artist for a few days... Main page.

Be interested? It only took me approx. .04387 of a second to say YES!!! lol

Then they sent me some questions to fill out... oh, and I had to supply them with a picture of myself.... After my break out of nerve hives, along with that funny little twitch I developed in my eye stopped also... I answered the questions, sent everything in... and there I am.

As you all know, I own an Alien that looks just like a Female Teenager...

Truth be told, she's a pretty good kid for the most part. She goes to College full time... works hard at her job that she's had for a couple years now.

BUT... then there's 'those' times when she behaves JUST like an Alien! (don't they all sometimes?) LOL

A Dear Friend of mine, Blondie of Vintage Primitives, made me these GREAT signature tags to "Make me Smile" as she put it.

Today at 5pm our door will open for your viewing pleasure... and please take my word for it, there is some wonderful items being offered by some of the most amazing Artisans. I'm so proud to be a small part of it!

Just so I don't give away too much of a preview, below are some peeks at what I'll be offering. A hint at one item: Broom Corn. I planted it, watered it, harvested it and dried it over the winter. Now I'm creating with it!

About Broom Corn: So the legend goes, that in 1725, Benjamin Franklin picked a small seed on a whisk broom that a friend had brought him from France for dusting his beaver hat. The next spring he planted that seed and it grew into a tall corn-like plant with a flowering brush of stiff fibers bearing seeds.

In 1781 Thomas Jefferson listed broomcorn as one of the six most important crops of the day.

*and a small side note: Riley the wonder dog is doing fabulous with her holistic recovery!
She's up to 3, 20 minute work outs a day now, without blowing her knee out. And I just know she's lost a little weight because I've had to tighten her harness twice over these last couple weeks. Weigh in will probably be next week to see just how much she's lost!

The Beginning of an Online Romance!

Riley the Wonder Dog has an Admirer!

First let me explain... Miss Riley blew out her knee on her back leg about a week ago. The Vet says this is pretty serious and it'll take 6 - 8 weeks to heal, plus measures to strengthen it for the months ahead. She ripped her ligament and now her knee pop's out of place. Plus that evil Vet said Riley has to drop some weight! OH NO!!!!
How much? A LOT!

ALL Miss Riley will do is sit on her pillow and will only get up to eat or do her business... and to truth be told, she's really not eating much either. I think it's the meds that are making her not hungry. It's so sad!

Riley's Human thought it a grand idea to let her run like the wind at her Parents Farm, while this Human was driving around the 4 wheeler. Riley's Human Grandparents said her little legs were going SO fast they couldn't see them... just a little blurr underneath her.
(guilt guilt guilt)

BUT! There's this GUY over in Oregon who has taken a fancy to Miss Riley and he sent her this AWESOME get well pail FILLED with all kinds of goodies!!!!!!!
I do believe this GUY sorta kinda likes Miss Riley!

Isn't this cool? A painters bucket was filled with an ambulance stuffed toy, an edible card, a bag of gormet cookies, an attachment for a water bottle so Riley can get a drink while we're out and about and prayer charm for her collar!

Poor Riley still is too injured to get up and check everything out but BOY WAS HER TAIL WAGGIN! She couldn't wait to chow down on a couple cookies!

She loves the edible card... but she kept eyeing that ambulance!

GOT IT!

Ahhhhh Playful Riley back in action.... ya ok, so she looks like she's super glued to the pillow. That's ok! She's all happy!!!!!

Now about this GUY. Hmmmm just WHAT do we know about him?

His name is Stewie!

Well, Riley thinks he's REALLY cute! She's been told he's a Puggle breed! YES! He's a mixed Pug just like her!!! He's a little bit taller than her and a little bit older. He's got those dreamy eyes that all the Girls swoon over... and he also has a loud bark! (but we're getting reports he's just an old softy) PLUS... his home town is RIGHT HERE in Kentucky!!!!!!

Riley says: NICE TAIL!

Now how can Riley resist this picture and not have little heart flutters???

He even lives in a house with a Volcano view!

He owns a Human by the Nickname of Mo... who's SUCH a wonderful friend to Riley's human. (so at least the inlaws will get along great hehehe)

What do you think? I think they'd make a GREAT Couple!!!!

EARTHQUAKE!!!! Felt in Central Kentucky!

At 5:36 this morning the Earth really did move under my feet!

We're OK! Riley the Wonder Dog actually lifted her head up to see what was rattling!
The dishes rattled in the cupboards and it felt like a caravan of trucks, hauling logs were bouncing by my house.
CNN reports: There were no immediate reports of major damage after the predawn quake, which struck at 4:36 a.m. (5:36 a.m. ET), but some minor damage was seen in the region.

Debris fell on a sidewalk and shattered in Louisville, Kentucky, after part of a cornice fell off a brick building, according to footage from the city's CNN affiliate WHAS-TV.

The epicenter of the earthquake -- the strongest in the region in 40 years -- was about seven miles below ground and 38 miles north-northwest of Evansville, Indiana, the USGS said. Map »

Nearly 10,000 people had sent reports of shaking to the USGS Web site by 9 a.m. ET.

I'm in a bird mood these last couple days.... Getting out some cute calico's and making these little bird pinkeeps seemed to fit into Spring time here in Kentucky.

Dogs are Nice People too!

I think my Alien has built in Puppy-radar.

The other day I sent her up to Odd Lots to get me a new oil cloth and she calls me on her cell phone. "MOM!!!! Want a 5 week old Black Lab/Basset Hound mixed puppy? This girl is up here at Odd Lots giving a bunch away for free!"

"If you bring another puppy home" (I say in my most stern Motherly voice) "... I will ground you! So just pet the little puppy and come home ALONE... And I MEAN it"

Half an hour goes by and I'm out back picking up some of the gazillion sticks in my yard... and here comes the Alien with this little black bundle of sweetness! OF COURSE I'm coo'ing and squealing... I take the puppy... giving him oodles of kisses and getting a puppy fix. (The stick picking up can wait)

After I come back to reality I say to the Alien... we aren't keeping him so I hope you found him a home. SHE DID! Her girlfriend would be taking him that evening after she got off work so we got to play with this little guy for about 5 hours!

He was so cute. But what was great is Riley the Wonder Dog took to that little pup like a big Sister. Riley shared all her toys and bones (like that huge one we bought her?) Riley's a good dog... well, until the little guy soiled on her blankie there. Riley wasn't too happy about that so what Riley did was drag that blankie over to the trash can. I guess that's her way of telling me something? Pish posh... a little Oxi Clean and it was good to go. :)

The little pup went to his new home that evening as promised, and is being loved to death. The Alien and her friend already have planned Puppy Day's to get Riley and him together. Too cute.

Prairie Dolls... so sweet

I've been creating!

I love making these sawdust prairie dolls. Each one has it's own personality... but they're all so sweet!

I've also been making angel sitters and burlap bag things... penny rugs... but what I really need to do is take a day and get outside, mow the lawn and get the yard cleaned up after this winter. I wonder how many twigs and branches I'll collect.

I'll be putting these up on my website and most likely LemonPoppySeeds. Is the 1rst coming up that fast? yep! ohhhh April Fools Day! hehehe I love that day. (my friends are scared though) LOL

On a side note, my Alien picked a daffodil for me today. Made me remember when she was 2 feet tall and giving me flowers with an adorable smile on her face. (funny how those flowers were always from my flower beds) ahem.

Diaries of a Modern Primitive Crafter

March 1rst was the first edition of the new online Magazine "The Olde Prairie Register".... if you haven't signed up for your free subscription, head on over there and get one!

There's great reading, featured artists, advertising space, give away's, contests, crafting tips and all kinds of fun things.

I wrote a fun little article (which I'll be doing again) and thought I would share the whole thing with you this time. Who knows.... "Diaries of a Modern Primitive Crafter" may turn into a series! LOL !

Dear Diary,

When I woke this morning, I immediately checked my middle finger on my left hand to see if that Udder Cream had actually worked as I heard it would. YES! My finger is healed almost completely!

For those of you who know what I'm talking about... my quilt is coming along nicely, thank you very much! AND mind you... not one drop of blood on it yet!

For those of you who do NOT know what in the world I'm talking about.... Udder Cream? Like in Cow Udders? oh yes... did you hear me? I said YES like Cows Udders! When you milk cows, those udders can get so very sore... poor cow. So the best medicine is a cream made special for the irritation and raw rubbing on their poor little udders. Well... when you quilt, you're constantly poking your finger that stays on the underside of the Quilt, sometimes until your finger bleeds. Hence: One Sore Finger! Udder Cream to the rescue! Now I can continue onward, destroying my finger for yet another day (I have a whole tub of this cream so I can self inflict wounds on my fingers for a long time! Or... milk a lot of happy cows)

Ahhh yes. The things we subject ourselves to when it comes to primitive crafting. It's not so much fun and games I tell you! It can be a full blown war zone! You against the supplies.

When I get out all the supplies needed to make my old fashion lye soap, I stop for a minute before I begin and yell out "BATTLE". Then onward to mix up liquid lye... which will hit temperatures that is very close to boiling point! Ahhh yes, then there's that accidental speck of lye crystal that will hit your arm and make you feel like you've just been shot with a gun! But it's the joy of making this soap that keeps me continuing onward.

Speaking of heat.... did you KNOW you shouldn't put the ceramic part of a crock pot directly ON the electric burner, with paraffin wax inside and the heat on low? WELL let me tell you... ummmm either call 911 or have a fire extinguisher on hand because that ceramic carrier will NOT handle any direct heat. It's amazing what melted wax, blazing with fire spikes hitting 3 feet in the air... can do to an entire stove, stove hood and ummmm the floor, the counter or anything else in it's path. Ahem... but melting wax is so much FUN to work with! Right? Scent it up nice and you can dunk all kinds of things in it for some yummy smelling, primitive fixins.

Stoves. This is a danger all in itself isn't it? Have you ever gotten that look from your Husband or Child... oh you know the one I'm talking about! Head slightly tilted, one eyebrow cocked... mouth a little pursed... as you are standing there, HUGE proud smile on your face as the words come out of your mouth. "I Just Finished Baking My Doll!" And, as you stand there OH so tickled pink... they just look at you like you have completely lost your mind! A doll. You cooked a doll in the oven? Well DUH! Of course I did! Ovens are a Primitive Crafter's best friend! Thanksgiving Turkeys? Well, I'm all over cooking one of those IF it's grunged just perfectly with the best blends of coffee's and spices, stuffed with rags or filling and sanded with sandpaper! Ohhh I just get all tickled thinking about making that kind of Turkey!

I have Children. Cute and Adorable little Aliens that they are. Oh yes... I just loved when they brought their friends home and the friend turns to my Daughter and asks "Your Mom is REALLY a Hooker?". As your Daughter giggles and says SHE SURE IS! As I smiled sweetly in front of my frame, hooking away... I had a vision of all my wool strips, my linen backing AND the rug hook stuffed inside her mouth so full she wouldn't be able to talk for a week! But... she wasn't technically lying now was she? When you hook rugs, you then are branded for life about being a 'hooker'. Your own Adult Friends get in on this joke also... I think at one time they were calling me Bubbles the Hooker because of my Lye Soap and Hooked Rugs. Har Har Har. (actually that was one of the more clever labels)

WOOL! I bet you wouldn't think of wool being a dangerous craft supply would you? So playing with needle felting has got to be the neatest craft.... take a felting needle and just poke poke poke and the Wool roving just sticks in ohhhh so good! Poke into what? Fabric? Skin? BONE! I don't think anyone is like me... I hold my felting needle up in front of my face and we have a little talk. "Needle" I say, "You will not poke all the way into my finger bone today ok?" But I finally figured out why it wasn't listening to me... well silly me, I thought it had ears so it can HEAR my demands! Sigh.... I'll have to figure out another way to get TO the needle to stop wanting to go play with my finger bones.

But then there's the YUMMY Wool fabric! I use a lot of black walnuts to dye my wools. Throw them in a 20 quart pot of boiling water and ohhhh the fun dye bath you can get. But, I bet you wouldn't think about getting poison ivy doing this! Or being attacked by a rabid squirrel! Or having the local Sheriff pull his car over to see what you're doing in the park, alone, with a bucket! Look, trust me when I tell you this: Upon encountering a rabid killer squirrel, with him knowing full well you are going to steal his black walnuts... RUN the other way!

Oh Diary... the memories we've shared. I just wonder if a Pioneer Lady was here today, in this time, in my home... if she wouldn't get a broom handle after me! But I'll be back another day, if I have all my fingers intact... to write more about the wonderful experience of Primitive Crafting!

Happy First Birthday Riley Girl!

Has it been a whole year already? This dog has sure changed this woman's life this last year. Over $2,000 to save her life... A FEW TIMES, not to mention the time she swallowed a tree, or for her to become an it... or the food, toys, blankets, leashes, collars, carriers and a slew of other things.

Riley girl was found by my Alien at the local McDonalds, in the parking lot. A couple of young teens were trying to get rid of her and they said they were feeding her mashed potato's and gravy from the Lee's chicken place across the street. So, of course the Alien grabs this little thing up and brings her home... where it proceeded to disrupt my life and drain a huge chunk of my savings. Notice I said 'Thing'. HA!

This dog was so tiny I almost jumped out of my skin. It's head was as big as a black walnut! But she was a little sick. Happy, but sick with ummm, those mashed potato's not agreeing with her if you know what I mean. That next day, I was at the first Vet's office. (yes, there was more than one!) He said, oh she's over 6 weeks old... here's some meds and let her eat whatever she wants for now. OH no no no... was bad advice. (expensive bad advice)

I'm eating a hamburger later that day and this little "thing" goes nuts. Gimme gimme gimme! Ok... sure, here's some, you little munchkin. WRONG! I shut down her pancreas. By that next day I hadn't slept, the "thing" was in what you call a steady death seizure and OFF to the Animal Hospital over in the next County. (Riley's death #1)

Riley isn't that old. Nope! She was ONLY 3 and a 1/2 weeks old. You could still see where the cord was on her belly. (The Vet created today's Birthday for Riley) So with a zero sugar level, high infection, dead pancreas... This wonderful Hospital brought Riley back to life. I wrote a hefty little check and scooped up my Puppy, against their wishes because they wanted to keep her over night to feed her every 2 hours, round the clock. (for more money) HA! Well heck, I can do THAT! They loaded me up with all kinds of weird stuff. Special food, special formula, special equipment, special sugar goo, special instructions... so Me Super Woman and Riley the "Thing" go home after hours of being in this incubator thing.

Where I proceed to loose my mind. Every two hours or she'll die! Oh I didn't quite understand that part. LOL Crafter I am. Animal Lover I am. Schooled Vet I AM NOT! But I can do this... ahem. Every single two hours, by alarm clock, this 'thing' was put inbetween two Coke 2 ltr. bottle's of hot water to manually regulate her temperature, give her goo food, her goo sugar, temp. taken, pre-measured meds in syringes (three of those) and I lost my mind. I still can't fully remember that week... it's a blur.

A couple times I had to rush her back to the hospital for zero sugar levels (Riley's death 2, 3 and 4). This little 'thing' was poked SO MANY TIMES in a month to draw blood, to put the blood in this machine they had, to check her sugar and other things. Riley would start screaming if the Vet came NEAR her with that needle because she knew she was going to get poked and squeezed. It was the saddest thing to see. Every time I took her in, Riley was near death and usually not awake.

She was only 7 ounces when I got her. Massive infections and no sugar levels, means either she'd burn up with a fever or she's freeze out with no sugar. But... it was through dedication and major work, this 'thing' survived.

She then proceeded a couple months later to eat a log or tree or something and oh boy... BACK TO THE HOSPITAL. (Riley's death #5) Xrays showed a full grown oak tree lodged in her throat. Surgery? MORE MEDS! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr She was drugged, brought home and brought back to the Hospital where they reached down and grabbed it, pulled it out... This was after I had informed them taht I had moved my Family into the big cardboard box next to Wallyworld so do something besides surgery! (eyeroll)

One thing they lied about was how big she was going to get. Of course, nobody knew what she was. Hense: Thing. Pug? Chihuahua? Could be any breed, but she for sure was mixed. Wouldn't be able to tell what she was until she got older, but I was told she shouldn't hit more than 5 pounds or so. YA RIGHT! See, they lied! LOL! Riley is weighing in at over 15 lbs today. She's both a Pug and Chihuahua so she's a "Chug".

She's actually very smart. She knows the names of all 28 of her 'toys' and she knows all kinds of tricks and commands. Know how you cuddle with a teddy bear to sleep with? That's how she sleeps with you.... she's my teddy bear and she let's me hug onto her like that all night long. The Alien sometimes will steal her after I fall asleep, then she takes Riley into her room. So Riley is a proven professional cuddler. This is Riley and the Alien below.

So Riley the wonder dog lives. A perfectly healthy, female Chug with the sweetest personality. Do I love her? Dumb me fell for her the second the Alien walked in the door with her. I really couldn't help it! We were meant to be bestest friends... and I promise to take care of you for the rest of your life. :)

Spring is a time for celebrating new beginnings! So come celebrate with us at The Olde Prairie Register. We are a free online magazine dedicated to primitives and those who love them. We offer articles on Antiques, media review, interviews with prim artists, tips for crafters, information on the primitive art movement, folk art discovery, fun and commentary. Our first issue comes out March 1st and we would love to see you.

To celebrate our debut issue, we are also holding a huge drawing. So many prizes, and everyone can enter. I've submitted a fun little article regarding the dangers of Primitive Crafting. And if you know me, you'll know how I've ummm, learned about some of these dangers! (ya ok, some are pretty funny) hahaha.

Here's a LITTLE sneak peak of my article:

Dear Diary,

When I woke this morning, I immediately checked my middle finger on my left hand to see if that Udder Cream had actually worked as I heard it would. YES! My finger is healed almost completely!

For those of you who know what I'm talking about... my quilt is coming along nicely, thank you very much! AND mind you... not one drop of blood on it yet!

For those of you who do NOT know what in the world I'm talking about.... Udder Cream? Like in Cow Udders? oh yes... did you hear me? I said YES like Cows Udders! When you milk cows, those udders can get so very sore... poor cow. So the best medicine is a cream made special for the irritation and raw rubbing on their poor little udders. Well... when you quilt, you're constantly poking your finger that stays on the underside of the Quilt, sometimes until your finger bleeds. Hence: One Sore Finger! Udder Cream to the rescue! Now I can continue onward, destroying my finger for yet another day (I have a whole tub of this cream so I can self inflict wounds on my fingers for a long time! Or... milk a lot of happy cows)

Full Eclipse February 20, 2008

Well, I tried to take some good photo's of the eclipse last night, but the full eclipse didn't come out at all. Here's the first shot as it's just happening.

and a little bit more..... (mind you I'm outside FREEZING during this) lol

here's it's almost gone.... (I'm frozen by now)

Here as you can see, my camera couldn't pick up the full eclipse at all.

(Yes Sarah, I was pointing the camera directly AT the moon) LOL

I was so tired that I ended up going to bed so I didn't get shots of the eclipse going away... When it was fully covered it was amazing! The color was a blood red. Almost spooky.

I'll post more later today because I have ANOTHER Blog Give Away to let you in on....

Mini Boxes

This looks like a Christmas picture with a pile of presents!

I'm in a box covering mood this last week and I had these little mini mache' boxes... and went to work. They turned out so cute!

I'm getting ready to list them on my website... but I'm thinking I'll get some listed tonight and have to finish listing the rest in the morning. The Alien isn't feeling very well tonight so I'm keeping an eye on her. Hope it's just a little bug and not a flu!

Oh... and I just found out I'm going to be a Great Aunt for the first time! Congrats Jessie!!!!

New Offerings!

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

My Valentine just so happens to be my Alien. She baked us up a batch of chocolate brownies, and when I'm finished updating all my co-op sites, I plan on hitting the couches with her, watching a good movie, eating those brownies (ok I may have 2!). Just the thought of be lazy together puts me in a good mood!

Speaking of co-op sites, I update the 15th of every month on 3.... and one of those I also update on the 1rst.

For TDIPTMercantile.com I made this wool penny rug. I'd been in a mood to play with color, and well, I guess I just wanted to play with a Lot of color! There's a couple other fun rugs/mats on there also.

The one below here is on SimplyPrimitives.com along with some other goodes.

On LemonPoppySeeds.com I made some simple covered box sets. I love these brown and blue set.

Maybe it's a good thing I've been so busy, otherwise I'd tell my Alien it was Valentine's Day more often just to get the brownies and lay around and watch movies! :)

Daffodils? In February????

It's a nice day here in Central Kentucky, so I thought I would get out in the yard and begin picking up the zillions of branches and twigs that were blown down from this last weeks horrible weather we had.

Look what I found behind the shed!!!!! Can you believe it????

It's only February 9th! These babies must have sprouted early this week and here I am just finding them. (you can see all the millions of little twigs I get to pick up too.. ugh)

Daffodils tend to grow wild here in Kentucky, it's amazing. You should see some of the rolling meadows filled with thousands of them... a sea of yellow. It's breath taking for sure!

This put me right into spring fever!

Still playing with Color

Here I go experimenting again...

I used a khaki green (army green? primitive green? it's a "something green") foundation for this penny rug. I wasn't sure about it as I was stitching it... I kept walking away, coming back to it... looking at it from across the room.... then I decided to finish it and just run with it. lol

I love to experiment with things... and yes you should have seen some of my disasters in the cooking area! BUT, sometimes things come out differently and fresh and new when you just dive in and do it a little different. You might just end up throwing things away also! ha ha! (which I've done more than a few times) Ahhh then there's those happy accidents that you didn't mean for them to happen but are so glad you went out of the box to experiment.

I think I'm going to save this penny rug for an update I have on the 15th of this month. I'm going to keep watching it for a few more days and see what other idea's I come up with... if any.

I thought I would do something a little different when making this penny rug... I used a black wool foundation, which to me, gave it a more Folk Art twist.

Made the same as my other penny rugs... just a little different!

I thought I would give my Alien Teen the spotlight on my blog for a moment.

She just turned 19 on January 27th and I really am proud of her ability to draw and sketch. These drawings were done by her this last year... and she's going to College, with Art as a major... along with English.

I wish I could draw like this... My Mother has this talent also. When I try to draw pictures... well.... ummmm.... we won't talk about that! hehehe

I can't wait to see what happens when she gets into other mediums to create with!

I wasn't joking around about owning one of these!

The pictures below show a shot of it on my prop area (with ammunition mind you)... the rug picture I just took today is on this prop area... that rug is on ebay right now.

So, you see.... it's REAL!

I also want you to know that this gun has been fired, in person, at BJ of Daughternature Primitive Folk Art. Actually, her whole family wasn't safe from my onslaught. They were pulling up in their car the day we did Dru's show "A Gathering at the Cabin 2007" at Cinnamon Creek Cabin. Dru was so sweet that day with everything going on... I just didn't have the heart to shoot her.

Understand, this gun has been used for many ummm drive by shootings at the local campus. My Alien Teen loves to pump it up and hold it out the window as she has no mercy for leaving a trail of little white mini marshmallows.

In my group forums on the internet, I've pretended to shoot pretty much all my friends with it. They've always doubted I had one... ha! Told ya I did!!!!

Now for the disclaimer: When shot with one, even at 1 inch from your face... they feel like cotton balls so it doesn't hurt. I don't own real guns so this was the next best thing... besides my water guns! hehehehe

I'm to come up with 5 things about myself (this just may bore you to death!), and then tag 5 more of my friends that have not been previously tagged.

1. I love to laugh and giggle. Plain and simple... Laughter is truly the best way to get through this life.

2. I'm a flipper. When I craft... I flip around and work on more than one project at a time. The penny rugs will be on the kitchen table, while dolls are being sewn and stuffed in the craft room... cinni fixins chillin in the fridge... something may be in the oven... drawings are near the couch for when I sit down for a minute.... I could be on the phone during all of this (yes I know this sounds crazy, and well, after reading it, I guess it is crazy)

3. I like to hang out with my girls. The Alien Teen who still lives at home... I just love our evenings when we have movie marathons and eat munchies. And when the Oldest comes home to visit.... to sit and gab like old girlfriends is just the best! (ok we talk on the phone everyday also) :)

4. I own a Marshmallow gun.

5. I am a Bingo Addict. I'm becoming a Give Away Addict quickly.

Moon Dog or Moon Halo

I've never seen one before have you?

This is a Moon Dog, or Moon Halo.

Now I'm in Central Kentucky, almost the middle of the State... so if you are anywhere close to me run outside and see if you can see this tonight!

I've called my friend Lana, who lives in TN and she could see it!

From what I understand, this means some bad weather is coming.

A few blurbs on Rings around the Moon tell the following findings.

Moon Ring Weather Folklore

Folklore has it that a ring around the moon signifies bad weather is coming, and in many cases this may be true. So how can rings around the moon be a predictor of weather to come?

The ice crystals that cover the halo signify high altitude, thin cirrus clouds that normally precede a warm front by one or two days. Typically, a warm front will be associated with a low pressure system which is commonly referred to as a storm.

It is believed that the number of stars within a moon halo indicate the number days before bad weather will arrive. Give it a try the next time you observe a moon halo.

I guess I need to plan on staying indoors for a few days huh!

Old Fashion Lye Soap Restocking

Finally a few more batches of my lye soaps are cured and have been put on my website.

The soap balls I made a couple weeks ago should be ready to sell over the next few days or so.

Kitchen Tip: Have you ever made hamburger patties and didn't wear gloves.... only to go and wash your hands afterwards with liquid dish soap or any other kind of soap.... and OH what a pain it is to get that grease off your hands? Grab some Lye Soap and it'll wash that grease off your hands like magic!!! Any kind I carry will cut through grease like that, but Lye Soaps with coffee in them also deodorizes.... like icky onion smells... poof gone. Will work for dishes also, without ever harming your skin.

Blackstrap Molasses Clove n' Brown Sugar Cinnamon

Orange Coffee

Praline Sweet Potato

Brown Flax Almond

Lilac Brown Flax (my Friend Rachael designed this kind last year)

Clove Coffee

Don't be under the impression that Lye Soap's are harsh.... they aren't. Mine are very gentle. Any of the 'Milk' soaps I love to use in the shower... even on my face. Those are probably the most soothing. Although my Father refuses to use ANY other kind except Basic Lard & Lye... the plain stuff... he's such a Guy. He's told me that over time, he's not using the hand lotion like he always had before with using store brand soap bars... he told me that even working outside in the barn on his tractor, that his hands are holding up better, without drying out in this cold weather, because he's been using just the lye soap. His skin hasn't been clogged up with a bunch of residue it didn't need... and now? his skin is better for using the Lye soap. (he's in his 70's)

Lye soap rinses 'Clean' without leaving residue on your skin. The soaps that I've put veggies in (like sweet potato or pumpkin) ohhh those are for more moisturizing. Coffee's and Cinnamon's.... well, they of course smell good but they can be used for deodorizing or for after you're working in the yard for your hands. There's just so many different kinds for so many different tastes or jobs... but all are very gentle.

What does an HTML tip and Lye Soap have in common?

Well... nothing!

But, today I learned how to turn words into clickable links! Yes, I understand that many people know how to do this and will probably think I'm a little strange that I'm all excited over this... But it's fun! (if you just learned) :)

Lana Manis of Honeysuckle Lane (see, clickable!)... She was so nice in teaching me how to do this. I thought I would pass it on to those of you who might want to know! "Pass it forward" as they say.

So you want a word (or phrase) to be a clickable word link. Ok, so select your word or phrase... I'll use Bluejean Primitives. Now take your mouse and highlight it.

In your edit functions... where you'd create a new post on your blog (or anywhere that has this button), there is a "hyperlink" button. It's usually a little button that has a world and a chain link on it. Well, once your word or phrase is highlighted, click on that button. Insert your website address (like mine would look like this: http://www.bluejeanprimitives.net) and then click ok.

It'll look like this: Bluejean Primitives

Isn't that easy and fun?! :)

Oh yes... the Lye Soap! Well... I'm not wonderful at taking candid pictures, but remember the other day when I was making Lye Soap? This is a partial shot of it laid out to cure.

I did end up forming that Chocolate Batch into balls and rolling them into ground cloves. I also made some other soap balls with my recipe of Sweet Potato Brown Sugar Cinnamon but decided to not roll those into any spices. Plus you can see some of the bars all lined up drying. (did you notice the clickable words?) lol!

These are pretty big soap balls. Bigger than a golf ball and should be done curing in a few weeks. Sometimes using the balls is easier than using a bar... then again, they just look nice in a grouping!

Lye Soap

I've spent the day making my lye soaps... and boy does my entire house smell wonderful!

This ummm very non-interesting picture is of a new little combo I came up with. I think I'm going to make these into soap balls and roll them in ground cloves. Doesn't it look like brownie batter?

It's a primitive chocolate.... and it's loaded with some yummy scented stuff! Sure smells like you could eat it.... but no.

I make my soap batches, one small batch at a time to keep control over it. This way it doesn't trace too fast or too slow... I can add the ingredients in at the right times and it sure makes some mild and wonderful old fashion soap.

Very First Hooked Rugs / Mats

So one day I went over to my Mothers house for a visit, and there she was, at the kitchen table planning her newest craft obsession of Braided Rugs.

I grab a cup of coffee and sit down with her...

right in front of me was a new copy of the Braidaid catalog.

I'd never heard of hooked rugs and Braidaid isn't anywhere to be found these days, but I saw some hooked rugs in there. They looked interesting so off Jean goes to do a little research. I read that all you do is take 1/4" inch strips of fabric and hook them into a backing of monks cloth... finish off the edges by turning them toward the back side and wallah... hooked rug right? HA!

I used an easy pattern out of that Braidaid catalog and made the below mat... being a quilter I had tons of calico cottons on hand...(well they SAID fabric) I also crochet so I had tons of crochet hooks. Went to the local fabric store, found monks cloth... used my quilting hoop and made the below mat.

It's NOT that bad. Of course I'm suprised I still have a right hand after hooking all those loops. Now come on, I did ok... Look! I even outlined the pictures... and I put a little red border on. LOL!

So the Hooker in me was born and more research was done...
Aha! you use WOOL!

Well of course you do so you don't have to pull THAT many loops through and
you can make the rug faster! lol duh!

So off to Goodwill to find some wool. Below is my second mat done, in "as is" wool, and the loops are VERY low.... but they are even! (ok it took a year or more to learn how to not pack... OK ok ok I still tend to pack but I'm much better now!) ha.

So here is Sunbonnet Sue... a Classic Quilting pattern. Trying NOT to pack my loops made little see-through spots in her hat. But she's still ok, and this time I made a little red border using two rows, not just one. :)

As you can see I did get a little bit better.

After all these years and all this hooking... to this day, I've never seen another hooked rug in person. I've only ever looked at pictures. I still have a lot to learn and at the moment I'm in a hooking burnout that's lasted a year now, but I'll never stop hooking. Once you get the bug? You're a Hooker for life! (I still can't believe I showed you these two rugs! I'll be laughing for weeks!)

One Alien Claw

Alien life forms do exist.

One report has shown that after spending last night in the ER with an 18 year old

Teenager (aka: Alien)... for slamming her right thumb digit in her car door...

the proof strengthens that Yes, Alien life forms are all around us.

This particular picture shows an unbroken digit, covered in a massive bandage.

The Doctor report reveals that the Alien claw will fall off and she will sprout a new one.

As you can see, completely bed ridden... (this was just a couch but it has been transformed to appear like a hospital bed). The Alien appears to be doing well and seems excited that she has a 4 day Doctors excuse from work.

The Aliens Earth Mother smiled the entire visit at the ER last night until 2:30 am, but frowned at the Doctor for not giving Her a 4 day, no work ticket.

When the Earth Mother mentioned to the Alien, that Earth women can have children and go home the very next day and continue their routine... the Alien just gave a blank stare.

My research to prove Alien's do exist will continue.

I've had such a relaxing quiet day... it's sure a fun week with Christmas, then my Birthday and then New Years right around the corner.

I worked a little on two penny rugs that will be up for sale soon... then a little ditty bag filled with drieds.... and some fixins. I also managed to cut out another dolly, but I'm not sure how I'm going to create her. She may be sawdust filled... or rag filled... I need to look at her a little longer to see how she will come about.

I was also cleaning out my cedar chest here and I found the very first hooked rug I ever attempted... yes, I used cotton calico's! (can you believe it?) But I'll post a picture of that hopefully tomorrow for you all to see. I also found the second little rug/mat I did. I managed to use wool on that and it's of a Sun Bonnet Sue.

I was TOLD Miss Riley would only be around 4 lbs full grown!

She weighed 7 ounces when she was found.

I believed everyone!

Hmmmm Still could happen right?
She only gets Cheerio's for treats!

Uh oh.... she obviously did not listen to her growth chart.

11 lb's on the head right now. I guess it's time chuggy goes on a diet.
It's not a bad idea being as Riley's Mommy is going on one also.
By the way... Miss Riley is a mix of Chihuahua and Pug. aka: Chug... a lug a lug a lug

My New Favorite Chocolate Treat!

My Teen recently made a few batches of these.

I think they are called Oreo Balls and she got the recipe from one of her College Friends. They are so good and so easy that I just had to share it with you!

Take one full package of oreo cookies (just the reg. kind) Put in blender and blend to fine (or nearly fine) Dump in a bowl. Add one package of cream cheese (softened) Mix with your hands (lol) Make little balls (or big ones) Take melted white chocolate and drizzle all over the tops of them... Set them in frig to chill and harden up some.

Get glass of milk, eat until you say UGGGG... repent later!

ps... just thinking to myself... don't they make MINT oreo's now? ohhh those would be good also for these!
